Rita Nabukenya, a supporter of the People Power movement, died on Monday as supporters rallied behind Robert Kyagulanyi Aka Bobi Wine as police barred them from accesing the Pop paul memorial in Neeba a Kampala surbub.
According to Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the leader of the People Power political movement, Nabukenya was run over by a police patrol truck hours after his consultative meeting at Pope Paul Memorial hotel had been blocked. “A very sad day! Yet again, police has murdered one of our solid leaders of the People Power Movement. Police saw Rita Nabukenya wearing People Power colours on a boda boda, run after her with a police patrol truck and knocked her dead” he said in part.
Hours later, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman, issued a statement which indicated that Nabukenya, a resident of Bunamwaya, was seriously injured after falling off a bodaboda and later rushed to Mulago Hospital.
Owesigere says the Motorcycle registration number UEY 675p was trying to overtake the police patrol but collided with another motorcycle whose number was not captured immediately because it fled after the scene.
Mr Owesigere said police at jinja road police has opened up inquires into the matter to find out what really happened as they look for the other rider who fled the scene.
“we have recorded statements from eyewitnesses and the crew of the 999 patrol vehicle. we shall retive the CCTV footage to confirm what exactly happened” he said
